This cellar located at the foot of the Langeberg Mountains, is one of the smallest co-operative cellars in South Africa. Despite its size, Nuy enjoys a widespread reputation for its excellent wines which, year after year, win top prizes at local and national wine shows. The origin of the name "Nuy" remains the subject of speculation, with arguments ranging from a derivation of the River Snuy, to derivation of a Bushman, Hottentot or Korana word. But whatever the origin of the name the proud tradition of wine making started centuries ago in the area, lives on.

Tulbagh Wine Route

Twee Jonge Gezellen Wines
TWEE JONGE GEZELLEN (TJ), ‘in the family’ since 1710, has always been synonymous with terms like pioneering, ground-breaking . TJ is the oldest family farm in the pioneer district of Tulbagh and the second oldest family-owned wine estate in South Africa. Translated, it means Two Young Bachelors or Two Young Companions.

The HOUSE OF KRONE was formed to recognise the significance of Nicky Krone’s contribution to the brand and to differentiate the Krone family’s Méthode Cap Classique (MCC) sparkling wines from its Twee Jonge Gezellen range of still wines. After all ... ‘A House is not a Home without a family ... ’

Saronsberg Wine Estate
Nestled at the foot of the mountain after which it is named, Saronsberg wine estate is a contemporary addition to the rich heritage of Tulbagh valley. It was formed late in 2002 when Waveren and Welgegund – two farm portions of the historic Twee Jonge Gezellen – were purchased and combined to create a unique location for this progressive winery. Two months later a fire swept through the valley, destroying almost all of Saronsberg’s vineyards and orchards. As a result, initial plans to gradually establish the vineyards before building the cellar were abandoned in favour of a rigorous replanting program, starting in 2003. In October of the same year, Dewaldt Heyns joined as winemaker – just in time to witness the final construction of Saronsberg’s cutting edge cellar and avant-garde tasting room. Harvest of the maiden vintage began on 25 January 2004 , when the farm’s first Sauvignon Blanc grapes were gathered. Those grapes became an award-winning wine, starting a trend of continuous critical and awards success that has seen Saronsberg grow into one of the brightest new stars in the South African wine industry.

Schalkenbosch Estate
Schalkenbosch was established in the mid to late 1700’s when Bernadus De Vaal retired from his position as reader/teacher in Tulbagh. The main house which was built in Cape Dutch style and completed in 1792 has been proclaimed a national monument. The gable, as well as the yellow and stinkwood wall-cupboard in the voorkamer, are both featured in South Africa’s record of architectural heritage. Schalkenbosch Estate is made up of four neighbouring farms, Schalkenbosch, Edenhof, Sagtevlei and Delta which cover an area of approximately 2500 hectares. The farming operations include a racehorse stud, cattle, orchards of apricots and prunes, fields of wheat and barley and the vineyards on Schalkenbosch itself. Quality wine is produced in the modern cellar behind the main homestead and is mostly exported to the German and Swedish markets.
